General
PS 5 has a New York State Common Core State standards-based curriculum. This allows teachers to expose students to a rich, diverse, and culturally responsive approach to learning. Every classroom teacher follows the philosophy of creating a student-centered classroom. Students are engaged in high level instructional conversations and teacher modeling that allows students to be able to tackle subject specific tasks. All tasks are differentiated to meet students at their learning abilities.
Reading
Open Court Reading Comprehension Curriculum is a complete Reading program which includes Phonics, Decoding, Dictation, Reading Fluency, Reading Skill Practice, Reading Comprehension, Language Arts, Writing, and Grammar.
Writing
Open Court Writing along with Writing Pathways is a complete writing program with supplements. Students learn how to write using different genres and themes. Teachers help students become proficient in writing especially in genes that students need to be college and career ready.
Mathematics
Envision Mathematics is a complete mathematics program. Teachers help students understand mathematical concepts, mathematical thinking and problem solving. Students also learn how to solve mathematical word problems and make real world connections understanding why mathematics is important.
Science
Amplify along with New York State Science Scope and Sequence is a complete Science program with supplements. Students learn the fundamentals of a variety of scientific standard-based themes. Experiments add to the richness of this program as students learn to research, ask questions, and investigate their finding.
Social Studies
New York State Passport to Social Studies is a complete Social Studies program. Students learn about the world their live in from the past to the present. Through research, reading, and writing students will develop a deep appreciation for the rich history of the world they live in.
